The practical revenue threshold for upgrading to Shopify Plus is 2M CAD annually. Below that number, the standard Growth plan handles almost every use case a Canadian merchant will meet. Above it, Plus starts paying for itself through lower transaction fees and checkout control.

What Shopify Plus actually adds

Plus is not a bigger version of the same product. It unlocks Shopify Functions (custom discount, shipping, and payment logic), full checkout.liquid or Checkout Extensibility control, Launchpad for scheduled campaigns, Flow with more triggers, wholesale B2B channels, and up to 200 staff accounts. You also get a dedicated launch engineer for the first migration and priority support.

The Growth plan covers hosting, unlimited products, up to 5 staff, standard checkout, and the same theme system. For most stores under 10,000 orders a month, that is enough.

If the real question is whether to stay on Shopify at all, Shopify vs WooCommerce for Canadian small business answers that one first.

The revenue math at 2026 rates

The case for Plus is usually argued on card fees, and on fees alone it rarely holds until a store is large. The figures below set the two plans side by side, with the monthly cost, the processing rate, and the point at which the difference starts to pay.

Growth costs 399 CAD/mo with 2.4% + 30 cents card fees on Shopify Payments in Canada. Plus starts at roughly 2,700 CAD/mo with 2.15% + 30 cents. The card-fee delta alone saves a 5M CAD per year store about 12,500 CAD annually. Add reduced app costs (many Plus features replace 200 to 500 CAD/mo apps) and the break-even sits near 2M in gross merchandise value.

When Growth is still the right call

Growth is still the right plan for most Canadian stores, and staying on it is a decision rather than a failure to upgrade. If your revenue, catalogue, shipping rules and team all sit inside the conditions below, Plus would add a monthly fee for capability you would not use.

  • Annual revenue under 1.5M CAD
  • Under 50 SKUs and no complex bundling
  • Standard shipping rules across Canadian provinces
  • No wholesale or B2B channel needed
  • Team of 5 or fewer

Most small stores sit in this bracket for the first two years. Upgrading early adds about 28,000 CAD a year in plan fees (roughly 2,700 CAD a month against 399) that do not return value yet.

When Plus is worth it before 2M

Three situations justify Plus before a store reaches the revenue where the fees pay for it. Needing checkout logic that the Growth plan cannot run, building a headless storefront that leans on the higher rate limits, and running separate storefronts for several countries. Each one is described below.

Three situations justify Plus at lower revenue. First, checkout customization: if you need custom fields, per-product shipping logic, or B2B pricing rules at checkout, Growth cannot deliver it. Second, headless or hybrid builds: Hydrogen and the Storefront API run better with Plus rate limits. Third, multi-store setups: brands running Canada plus US plus UK storefronts benefit from the 9 additional expansion stores Plus includes.

Migration effort and timeline

Moving from Growth to Plus is not a rebuild. Your theme, products, customers, orders and apps all stay where they are, and the platform side of the move takes a few business days. What takes longer is the work you upgraded in order to do, such as rewriting checkout logic.

The honest recommendation for Canadian merchants

Stay on Growth until one of three things is true: you have crossed the revenue where the fee difference pays, you need checkout behaviour Growth cannot produce, or you are running storefronts in three or more countries. Upgrading before one of those fires buys capability you will not use.

Stay on Growth until one of three triggers fires: you cross 2M CAD annual revenue, you need checkout logic Growth cannot provide, or you are running three or more country storefronts. Upgrading before that trigger burns roughly 2,300 CAD a month for features you will not use. When you do upgrade, plan the migration around a slow-season week and give yourself two full weeks of overlap.

Common questions

These are the questions Canadian merchants ask before committing to Plus, answered with the same figures used above. The short version is that fee savings alone rarely justify the jump, and the stores that are happy after upgrading are the ones that needed a capability rather than a discount.

Is Shopify Plus worth it at 1M CAD revenue?

Not on fees alone. At 1M in gross merchandise value, the card-fee savings recover about 2,500 CAD per year, which does not offset the 28,000 CAD annual plan premium. Plus is worth it at 1M only if you need checkout customization, wholesale B2B, or multi-country stores. Otherwise stay on Growth and revisit when you cross 2M.

Can I negotiate the Shopify Plus monthly fee?

Yes. Shopify prices Plus on a sliding scale that starts at 2,700 CAD/mo and rises with revenue at 0.25% of monthly GMV up to a cap. High-volume merchants negotiate annual contracts with locked pricing. Ask for a 12 or 24 month commitment in exchange for a fixed monthly rate below the variable formula.

Does Shopify Plus include better checkout in Canada?

Yes. Plus unlocks Checkout Extensibility, which allows custom fields, conditional shipping rules, and Canadian tax display logic that Growth cannot handle. You can also apply provincial rules (QST for Quebec, PST for BC and SK) at the line-item level. Growth stores handle these through workarounds like Shopify Markets or third-party apps.

Do I lose apps or data when migrating to Plus?

No. All products, customers, orders, discounts, and installed apps carry over. Themes stay the same. The only things that change are your plan tier, checkout capabilities, and access to Functions and Launchpad. Some apps offer discounted Plus pricing that activates automatically once your store upgrades.

How much does a Plus migration cost with an agency?

A pure plan upgrade with no code changes runs 2,000 to 5,000 CAD in agency time. A full Plus migration with new checkout logic, Functions development, and B2B setup runs 15,000 to 40,000 CAD depending on complexity. See our Shopify migration cost breakdown for the full picture.
