The bench book
Where does each AI answer draw the line?
Whether you were named is decided by matching your name against the answer you pasted, not by asking an engine to grade itself. The first three are pass or fail, because being on a shortlist has no middle. The last two can be partly, and that middle is the interesting one: it knows you, but it learned you from somebody else.
| Question | Passes when | Partly when | Fails when |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01The open question | Your business name appears in the answer. | — | The answer names other businesses and not yours. |
| 02The shortlist | You are one of the three it hands over. | — | Three names, none of them yours. |
| 03The reviews question | You are named when reputation is what was asked for. | — | Somebody else’s reviews answered the question. |
| 04What it knows | It said something specific about you and a source on your own domain. | It knows you, but from somebody else’s page — or it showed no sources at all. | It hedged, or said outright it could not find you. |
| 05The citation gap | Your own domain is among the sources for what you sell. | It answered from directories and aggregators only, or cited nothing. | It could not find what you offer at all. |

What can the AI visibility mirror not see?
Said here rather than discovered later. A tool that hides its limits is worth less than one that names them.
- Why you are missing
- The mirror shows the absence. The cause is usually a page that never answers the question in its own words, an entity Google cannot match to a business, or a competitor who wrote the paragraph first. Finding out which is a person’s job.
- Whether what it said is true
- It will state your prices, your hours and your services with complete confidence, and it may have got them from a directory that has been wrong since 2022. We show you the sources it showed you. You are the one who knows which of them are lying.
- Tomorrow
- An answer engine is not a ranking. Ask the same question twice in a week and the order can move. That is why the reading is dated to the minute, and why the thing worth watching is the same questions run again next month.
- A name written in a way we cannot pick out
- Reading business names out of English prose without a language model is pattern matching, and it can miss. Where it cannot read a list, the report says so rather than reporting a shortlist it never saw — and whether your own name appears is a plain text match, which does not miss.
All four are what a person adds. Have us run all four engines by hand — a reply comes within one business day. The monthly version is twenty prompts across four engines, and the site’s own nine-point check is at the audit.
Nothing in the mirror. Put your name in it.
Five questions, about five minutes, and a page you keep. No account, no email, no card.
